Cyprus parliament passes the gender mainstreaming law of 2026
The House of Representatives of Cyprus has passed the Gender Mainstreaming Law of 2026. Commissioner for Gender Equality Josie Christodoulou stated that the legislation mandates a systemic process to integrate gender perspectives into all state policies and actions. Ministries, deputy ministries, and broader public sector entities are now required to evaluate the differential impact of their decisions on women and men. The law also integrates gender equality as a parameter in public policy design and state budget formulation. Additionally, it establishes a framework for the systematic collection of gender-disaggregated statistical data. This reform aims to improve accountability and resource allocation based on actual citizen needs. Christodoulou acknowledged the contributions of the parliamentary legal committee, the Ministry of Justice, the Law Office of the Republic, and the former Commissioner for Legislation in achieving this legislative outcome.
