Consumer association seeks clarification on new government measures
Marios Drousiotis, president of the Cyprus Consumers' Association, expressed cautious approval of the economic measures announced by the President of the Republic on Thursday. A primary concern raised by the association is whether heating oil is included in the announced reduction of excise duty, as the President's statement explicitly referred to fuel for transport. Drousiotis emphasized that heating oil is consumed year-round for water heating in buildings lacking alternative energy sources and requested immediate clarification on its status. Additionally, the association seeks details regarding the application of a zero VAT rate on specific food items. Specifically, they are asking if this policy covers processed products like frozen goods, canned foods, and charcuterie, in addition to fresh meat, fish, and chicken. As of now, no official or unofficial response has been provided by the government. The association argues that if heating oil is excluded, it should be included to maintain consistency with previous subsidy programs.
