Obesity concerns and health policy debate in Cyprus
Recent reports presented to the Cypriot parliamentary health committee highlight high rates of obesity, with approximately 30% of adults and 42% of children affected. Experts from the Cyprus Obesity Research Society state that genetics accounts for up to 75% of cases. Health officials, including Savia Orphanidou, noted the connection between obesity and chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer. The Cyprus Obesity Research Society is calling for obesity to be officially classified as a chronic disease, aligning with World Health Organization guidelines. This formal recognition would facilitate patient access to specialized medical services, medication, and structured care. Proposed measures include the establishment of a specialized national center staffed by doctors, dietitians, psychologists, and bariatric surgeons. Furthermore, experts emphasize that 80% of children with obesity are at risk of remaining obese into adulthood, necessitating a comprehensive government-led strategy.
