Agia Marina Chrysochous dam overflows in Paphos
The Agia Marina Chrysochous dam in the Paphos district overflowed on Saturday following persistent heavy rainfall. This reservoir is the third in the district to reach capacity this week, following the Argaka and Pomos dams. With a capacity of approximately 300,000 cubic metres, the dam serves as a vital irrigation source for local crops. Water Development Department data indicates that March has seen the highest water inflow since 2019, with total reservoir levels across Cyprus reaching 29.9% capacity, marking a 5.4% increase over last year. Despite these improvements, experts emphasize that systemic water shortages persist, particularly for the Southern Conveyor system which remains at 24.9% capacity. While the Evretou dam is currently at 38% capacity, other major reservoirs like Asprokremmos and Kannaviou also show increased storage compared to the previous year. Authorities continue to advise careful adherence to water conservation measures across the island.
