Audit Office prepares to launch investigation into Paphos Municipality

A team from the Audit Office visited the Paphos Municipality on Thursday, March 26, to coordinate with local officials ahead of a formal financial and regulatory audit scheduled to begin on Monday, March 30. The audit aims to assess whether the municipality's actions comply with current regulations, legislation, and principles of good administration. The scope of the investigation includes complaints regarding financial matters and allegations involving the suspended mayor, Phaedon Phaedonos. The Green Party – Citizens' Cooperation movement claimed the audit specifically targets potential misuse of public funds and abuse of power concerning major municipal projects, though the Audit Office has not officially confirmed this scope. Audit spokesperson Yiota Michail stated that the investigation will be thorough and flexible, potentially expanding beyond the initial plan depending on findings. No completion deadline has been set, and investigators will cooperate with all relevant municipal staff and entities to gather necessary evidence. Preparatory meetings between auditors and council members were described as collaborative.
