Bus drivers in Nicosia hold work stoppage over traffic camera concerns
On Friday, March 27, 2026, bus drivers represented by the OMEPEGE-SEK and SEGDAMELIN-PEO unions held a two-hour work stoppage from 09:00 to 11:00. The protesters gathered at Solomos Square in Nicosia to demand the installation of countdown timers or warning systems for red traffic lights. Union representatives, including Charalambos Avgousti, stated that the current camera system forces drivers of large, heavy vehicles to brake abruptly, which poses safety risks to passengers and has led to minor injuries. Drivers argued that while they accept traffic enforcement, the lack of warnings makes it difficult to stop safely. The unions reported that 26 drivers have already exceeded the 18-point penalty threshold. They warned that they would escalate industrial action if the Ministry of Transport fails to provide a satisfactory solution. The unions officially apologized to the public for the inconvenience caused by the protest.
