Bus drivers hold two-hour strike in Nicosia over camera system safety concerns

On Friday, March 27, 2026, bus drivers affiliated with OMEPEGE-SEK and SEGDAMELIN-PEO unions held a two-hour work stoppage from 09:00 to 11:00. The drivers organized a protest rally at Solomos Square in Nicosia to express their dissatisfaction with the current traffic light camera system. According to the unions, they have made repeated interventions to the Ministry of Transport regarding safety issues for professional drivers, but no substantial solution has been provided. The unions proposed installing warning systems for traffic lights to prevent abrupt braking, which they argue poses significant safety risks to passengers. They highlighted that buses cannot stop suddenly without endangering standing passengers or those seated without seatbelts.
