Cypriot artist and author Andreas Karayan dies at 83

Cypriot painter, writer, and photographer Andreas Karayan has died at the age of 83 following recent health issues. Born in Nicosia in 1943, Karayan originally studied medicine at the University of Athens before transitioning to arts, studying painting in London and printmaking in Stuttgart. He returned to Cyprus in 1978 after establishing his career with an initial exhibition in Athens. His work, characterized by themes of the male nude and eroticism, includes the 1985 trilogy 'Cyprus 82–85,' which addresses forms of oppression. A long-time contributor to the newspaper 'Phileleftheros,' he divided his time between Greece and Cyprus. In recognition of his cultural contributions, the Cypriot House of Representatives awarded him its medal just months before his death. Officials, including House President Annita Demetriou, have acknowledged his legacy in representing Cyprus on the international cultural stage.
