Eurostat report on preventable deaths in 2023

Eurostat data for 2023 shows that Cyprus recorded the lowest rate of preventable deaths in the European Union at 152.6 per 100,000 residents, consisting of 62.9 treatable and 89.7 preventable cases. Across the EU, approximately 1 million people under the age of 75 died from avoidable causes, with 376,434 attributed to treatable conditions and 655,321 to preventable illnesses. The standardized EU mortality rate from all preventable causes reached 237.7 per 100,000 people. Leading causes for treatable deaths included ischemic heart disease, colorectal cancer, and breast cancer. For preventable deaths, lung cancer was the primary cause, followed by ischemic heart disease and alcohol-related disorders. Latvia, Hungary, and Romania recorded the highest rates of preventable deaths among member states. Luxembourg followed Cyprus with the next lowest rate at 157.6 per 100,000 residents.
