President Trump reschedules state visit to China for May
U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that he will visit China on May 14-15 to meet with President Xi Jinping. The trip was originally scheduled for March 31 but was postponed due to the U.S.-Israel military operation against Iran. Following joint strikes on Iran, which resulted in the death of the Iranian supreme leader, regional tensions escalated, leading to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and a global fuel crisis. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that President Xi accepted the delay to allow the U.S. president to manage the ongoing combat operations. While the White House has confirmed these dates, the Chinese Foreign Ministry has only stated that communication between the two sides is ongoing, noting that Beijing typically does not confirm leader schedules far in advance. Additionally, Trump announced plans to host President Xi in Washington, D.C. later this year. This visit would mark the first time a U.S. president has traveled to China in nearly a decade.
