Fatal traffic collision claims life of 28-year-old police officer in Nicosia

Andreas Antoniou, a 28-year-old police officer serving in the drug squad (YKAN), died following a traffic collision on Griva Digeni Avenue in Engomi, Nicosia, on the night of Friday, March 27, 2026. The incident occurred around 10:20 p.m. when his motorcycle collided with a vehicle driven by a 23-year-old woman. Despite wearing a protective helmet, the officer was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Nicosia General Hospital. The 23-year-old driver underwent alcohol and drug testing, which both yielded negative results; she was subsequently arrested under a court warrant to assist with the ongoing investigation. Authorities are currently examining evidence and investigating potential causes, including a possible lane change maneuver. The funeral of Andreas Antoniou is scheduled for Tuesday, March 31, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at the Church of Saint Panteleimon in Makedonitissa, with burial to follow at the Engomi cemetery.
