Gesy implements digital prescription barcode and extends referral validity
The Health Insurance Organization (HIO) has upgraded the General Healthcare System (Gesy) software, effective from March 26-27, 2026. A key feature is the introduction of a digital barcode for prescriptions, which allows beneficiaries to obtain medication, medical devices, or sanitary products at pharmacies without disclosing personal data. This code is accessible via the Beneficiaries Portal at www.gesy.org.cy under the 'Available Referrals' section. Additionally, the validity of referrals for laboratory tests has been extended from six months to one year. Other updates include simplified prescription processes for cancer patients and the creation of a registry for multiple sclerosis patients, granting them direct access to neurologists with a reduced co-payment of 6 euros. These changes aim to modernize services, enhance data protection, and reduce patient inconvenience.
