Cyprus government considering new consumer support measures
The Cypriot Ministry of Finance is evaluating various support scenarios for consumers in response to rising costs. A decision on potential measures is expected this Thursday. Public discourse has centered on the effectiveness of reducing Value Added Tax (VAT) on essential goods and fuels versus electricity. Some experts argue that reducing taxes on fuels or consumer goods may be absorbed by businesses, failing to provide direct relief to citizens. Conversely, they suggest that subsidizing electricity through the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) is more effective. This is because the EAC is a strictly regulated entity, preventing market speculation. Other proposed alternatives include reducing emission charges if lowering the current 9% VAT rate on electricity is legally restricted. These measures aim to mitigate the financial burden on households and stabilize the cost of living.
