Fire service rescues 31 hikers trapped in Avakas Gorge
On Wednesday, March 25, the Cyprus Fire Service conducted two rescue operations at the Avakas Gorge in the Paphos district following heavy rainfall and a sudden rise in water levels. The first distress call was received at 13:13, resulting in the successful rescue of 26 hikers, including children, who were transported to safety using ropes and life jackets. A second call occurred at 16:20 regarding five additional hikers stranded in a different section of the gorge. In this second incident, the Fire Service used rescue equipment to assist three individuals, while the remaining two managed to exit the area on their own. All 31 hikers were reported to be in good health with no injuries. Authorities emphasized the need for public caution, noting that some tourists attempted to enter the gorge even after the rescue operations concluded. Following these events, the Fire Service issued a reminder for the public to avoid hiking in areas prone to sudden flooding during adverse weather conditions.
