Nineteen hotels awarded circular economy certificates in Cyprus
On March 24, 2026, the Cyprus Employers and Industrialists Federation (OEB) hosted an award ceremony in Nicosia to grant Circular Economy Certificates to 19 hotel businesses. The initiative is part of the measure 'Promotion of Circular Economy in Hotel Facilities,' which aims to support the green transition of the Cypriot tourism sector. This project is implemented in collaboration with the Deputy Ministry of Tourism and funded by the European Union's Recovery and Resilience Facility as part of the 2021-2026 Cyprus Recovery and Resilience Plan. The certificates were presented by Minister of Finance Makis Keravnos, Deputy Minister of Tourism Kostas Koumis, and OEB President George Pantelidis. Officials emphasized that circular practices are essential for the sustainable development and strategic enhancement of the tourism industry. OEB President Pantelidis noted the importance of government support for the sector, particularly given the economic challenges posed by the crisis in the Middle East. Among the recognized businesses is the Aliathon Resort in Paphos, whose owner, Themis Filippidis, highlighted the resort's commitment to reducing its environmental footprint. The government and OEB expressed that this certification scheme is a key step toward establishing a new, sustainable growth model for national tourism.
