Man arrested for theft of bronze hero busts in Yermasoyia
A 36-year-old Romanian national was remanded in custody for five days by a court after being caught in possession of a stolen bronze bust. The theft of four hero busts from a memorial in Yermasoyia occurred between March 19 and March 21, 1974. The deputy mayor of Yermasoyia reported the crime to the police on March 21. Following a tip-off, Limassol police arrested the suspect on March 25 while he was allegedly attempting to sell one of the stolen items. During questioning, the suspect denied involvement in the theft, claiming he found the bust in a pedestrian underpass and attempted to sell it without knowing it was stolen. The police are continuing their investigation to recover the remaining three busts and have scheduled further testimonies. The victims commemorated by the stolen busts are Panagiotis Tsangaris, Trofimos Koulis, Evangelos Georgiou, and Sophronis Sophroniou.
