Cyclonic weather system Erminio impacts the Eastern Mediterranean
The Erminio low-pressure system is causing unsettled weather, including rain and thunderstorms, across Cyprus and Greece. In Greece, particularly in the Attica region, the storm resulted in one fatality, widespread flooding, and approximately 400 calls to the fire department for fallen trees and water pumping. Meanwhile, Cyprus is experiencing high dust concentrations alongside intermittent rainfall, with the dust phenomenon expected to linger until Saturday or Sunday. Meteorological data shows that Cyprus has already reached 57% of its average monthly rainfall for April within the first two days. The Department of Meteorology in Cyprus and international forecasts from the WMO predict above-average rainfall in the region until April 14, 2026. In Italy, the cyclone caused severe damage, including a bridge collapse in the Molise region and major transport disruptions. Authorities in various affected areas are working to manage the damage and restore normalcy as weather conditions gradually improve in parts of Italy.
