Yellow weather warning issued for Cyprus due to storms and dust
The Cyprus Department of Meteorology has issued a yellow weather warning in effect from 06:00 to 18:00 on April 18, 2026. The alert covers expected intense storms, potential hail, and shifting, strengthening winds, with localized rainfall possibly exceeding 35 millimeters per hour. High concentrations of atmospheric dust were reported in Famagusta, Paphos, and Agia Marina Xyliatou, though the phenomenon is expected to gradually subside. Temperatures are forecast to range between 21 and 24 degrees Celsius in inland and coastal areas, and down to 3 to 9 degrees in mountainous regions like Chionistra. The Civil Defense has issued public safety recommendations, urging citizens to keep drainage systems clear, secure loose outdoor objects, and avoid basements during heavy rainfall. Motorists are advised to avoid flooded roads and prioritize safety by leaving immobilized vehicles. These weather conditions are expected to persist through the weekend, with further localized rain and isolated storms anticipated by Sunday.
