Unseasonal snowfall recorded in Troodos mountains
In early May 2026, the Troodos mountain range in Cyprus experienced significant, unseasonal snowfall. Reports on snow depth vary, with estimates ranging from 6 centimeters at the Jubilee Hotel to 19 centimeters at the ski center, while meteorological officials estimate levels above 10 centimeters at the highest peaks. This cold spell, which included rain and low temperatures, caused slippery road conditions and reduced visibility. Andreas Chrysanthou and Iasonas Christodoulou from the Department of Meteorology noted that the weather system would gradually subside, with temperatures expected to rise significantly toward the end of the week. By Friday, temperatures in the interior are projected to return to normal seasonal levels near 28-29°C. Additionally, the Mavrokolympos dam in Paphos reached 89.6% capacity as of April 30. Authorities advised that the rare snowy landscape is expected to melt quickly within 2-3 days as summer-like conditions return.
