Severe weather conditions hit Cyprus with snowfall and gale-force winds
On Monday, May 4, 2026, Cyprus experienced unstable weather caused by a low-pressure system and a cold air mass. The Department of Meteorology issued a yellow warning for strong to gale-force winds, reaching up to 9 Beaufort in some areas, which remained in effect until midday. The adverse weather resulted in structural damage in the village of Kyperounta, including damaged roofs and fallen signs. Unusual for May, heavy snowfall was recorded in the Troodos mountains, with accumulation reaching approximately 10 to 14 centimeters. Localized rain, isolated thunderstorms, and potential hail were reported, primarily affecting the western half of the island. Temperatures were notably low, reaching only 18°C inland and 8°C in the mountains, with frost expected overnight in higher altitudes. Conditions are expected to improve gradually by the afternoon, with more stable weather forecast by Thursday.
