4.9 magnitude earthquake strikes Mount Athos

A 4.9 magnitude earthquake occurred on Wednesday night on Mount Athos, with its epicenter located 11 kilometers northwest of Karyes at a depth of 10.6 kilometers. The seismic event was felt as far as Thessaloniki and the Sporades islands. Following the main tremor, several aftershocks were recorded, including notable events ranging from 2.8 to 3.3 magnitude. Minor structural damage was reported, specifically cracks in old buildings and sketes, and a piece of a chandelier detached in the Church of the Esphigmenou Monastery delegation. Seismologist Gerasimos Papadopoulos suggested that this event might be a delayed strong aftershock related to seismic activity that has persisted in the region since the summer of 2024.
