Meeting held regarding proposed construction of central prison in Mathiatis

On Tuesday evening, Justice Minister Costas Fitiris held an emergency meeting with the Mathiatis Community Council to discuss the government's plan to construct a new central prison in the area. The Minister stated that the project aims to replace current facilities with a modern, secure, and human-rights-compliant complex outside the urban center. He noted that the project is expected to bring local economic growth, job creation, and infrastructure improvements. However, local representatives expressed reservations regarding the project's impact on the community. Community leader Kyriakos Tsatsos highlighted existing concerns about the burden of current land usage, such as military camps, and emphasized that the community is not yet committed to the project. Both parties agreed that the government will present a detailed master plan and perform environmental impact assessments for further review. The community intends to evaluate these documents before deciding on its official position.
