Man arrested for theft and staged burglary in Crete

A man from Albania was arrested by police in Lasithi, Crete, after stealing 11,000 euros from an Egyptian roommate. The three involved individuals, including a second Egyptian roommate, shared both a residence and a workplace at a construction site in Elounda. The theft was reported to the authorities on Tuesday by one of the victims. During the investigation, the suspect initially claimed that he had also been robbed of 400 euros and asserted that a burglary had occurred, pointing to a breached door as evidence. However, police review of security camera footage and further investigation revealed that the suspect had returned to the residence alone under the pretense of retrieving forgotten items to commit the theft. The suspect admitted to gambling the stolen funds, and authorities managed to recover approximately 8,000 euros, which were returned to the rightful owner.
