European Union reallocates 34.6 billion euros for strategic priorities
The European Union is reallocating 34.6 billion euros from its 2021-2027 cohesion policy budget to address new geopolitical and economic challenges. This figure represents approximately 10 percent of the total 367 billion euro cohesion budget. Of the total reallocated funds, 15.2 billion euros are designated for competitiveness and innovation, 11.9 billion euros for defense and civil preparedness, 3.3 billion euros for housing, 3.1 billion euros for water resource management, and 1.2 billion euros for energy transition and industrial decarbonization. In this context, Cyprus has decided to allocate 64 million euros specifically for the improvement of its water resource management. This decision is part of a broader mid-term review of EU programs, which was accelerated by shifts in security, energy, and climate requirements. The Cypriot allocation is drawn from the total 969 million euros assigned to the country for the current budgetary period. These adjustments are intended to enhance the resilience and strategic independence of member states.
