Church of Cyprus donates embassy building to Greece

On Wednesday, during the March 25th national anniversary celebrations at the Panagia Faneromeni Church in Nicosia, the President of the Church Committee, Chrysostomos Chrysostomou, announced the donation of the building housing the Greek Embassy to the Greek state. The decision was made following a proposal by Archbishop Georgios of Cyprus. The historic building, located on Byron Avenue, has served as a Greek diplomatic site since before the independence of Cyprus. The ceremony was attended by Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides and the Greek Ambassador to Nicosia, Konstantinos Kollias. Ambassador Kollias thanked the Church for the donation, stating that the building will continue to serve the purposes of the Greek Embassy. While some sources describe the act as a long-overdue honor, others emphasize that the donation formalizes a long-standing diplomatic presence. The necessary legal procedures for the transfer of ownership will be initiated under the guidance of the Archbishop.
