Update on foot-and-mouth disease outbreak in Cyprus

As of March 26, 2026, authorities in Cyprus have confirmed 49 livestock units affected by foot-and-mouth disease. The latest three cases were identified in the Dromolaxia-Meneou area, involving two sheep units and one cattle unit. Veterinary services report that approximately 26,800 sheep and goats have been culled, along with 1,742 cattle. Vaccination efforts are underway, with 98 percent of cattle and 72 percent of sheep and goats receiving their first dose. Despite containment measures, officials warn that the outbreak is still in its early stages. The Ministry of Agriculture has launched a dedicated website, www.footandmouth.gov.cy, to provide information on biosecurity, compensation, and animal health regulations. Vaccination doses for pigs are expected to arrive by the end of the month to bolster protection across all livestock species.
