Foot-and-mouth disease outbreak in Cyprus

As of March 26, 2026, foot-and-mouth disease has affected 5.5% of Cyprus's livestock, excluding pigs. The disease has been confirmed in 46 farms across the Larnaca and Nicosia districts, though no new cases were reported in the 24 hours prior to the announcement. Authorities continue culling infected animals and conducting vaccinations, with 500,000 additional doses expected by the end of March. The Ministry of Agriculture is currently performing sampling and contact tracing. A specialized scientific committee, led by Stavros Malas, has been established to oversee the recovery of the livestock sector. The committee's initial focus is to protect high-genetic-value animals to assist in future herd replenishment. An animal count has been finalized to facilitate compensation payments to affected farmers.
