Greece and Cyprus commemorate March 25th anniversary and discuss defense cooperation

During a reception at the Greek Embassy in Nicosia celebrating the March 25th anniversary of the 1821 Greek Revolution, Greek Ambassador Konstantinos Kollias and Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides reaffirmed the strong strategic ties between the two nations. President Christodoulides expressed gratitude to Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis for providing military support, specifically through the deployment of fighter jets and frigates to bolster Cyprus's defensive capabilities amidst regional instability. The President noted that this move prompted other European Union member states to demonstrate solidarity. Both officials highlighted the importance of intergovernmental cooperation in economy, energy, and security. They also discussed progress in EU-level discussions regarding the potential activation of Article 42.7 of the EU Treaty for mutual defense. The Ambassador emphasized that Greece remains committed to supporting Cyprus in ending the occupation and ensuring reunification. Additionally, the event served to underline the historical, cultural, and religious bonds shared by the two states as they navigate current international security challenges.
