President Christodoulides discusses British bases and Cyprus problem
President Nikos Christodoulides stated that Nicosia has a clear, step-by-step plan regarding the British bases in Cyprus. Speaking in Nicosia following the March 25th National Day parade, he confirmed that he has already informed the British government and the National Council about the government's position. He refused to disclose further details publicly, citing the risk of harming the ongoing diplomatic efforts. Addressing reactions from the Turkish-Cypriot side regarding the negotiation of these bases, the President clarified that Turkish Cypriots could participate only after returning to the Republic of Cyprus. He further asserted that Turkey could only have a say in the future of the bases once it recognizes the Republic of Cyprus. Regarding broader regional developments, the President expressed cautious optimism for the Cyprus problem following his recent meeting with the UN Secretary-General in Brussels. He noted that the UN has a clear political will and plan, hoping for a constructive response from the Turkish side. Additionally, the President announced that he will present measures tomorrow aimed at addressing the effects of the regional crisis.
