Status update on Cyprus peace talks and diplomatic engagement
President Nikos Christodoulides has proposed a new meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman, for which he is still awaiting a response. The proposal, conveyed through a negotiator, seeks a meeting within April 2026. This initiative followed the President's meeting with the UN Secretary-General's Special Representative in Cyprus, Kasim Diagne, on March 27, 2026. During that meeting, discussions covered regional developments and the objective to resume negotiations from where they were previously interrupted. Mr. Diagne, who is scheduled to meet with Mr. Erhurman on March 30, 2026, at 11:00, confirmed that the UN is prepared to facilitate such meetings at any time. Regarding the UN Secretary-General's Personal Envoy, Maria Angela Holguin, UN sources indicated there are currently no plans for her immediate return to the island. Furthermore, the government emphasized that the presence of UNFICYP remains essential due to the ongoing Turkish occupation.
