Status of Cyprus peace talks and diplomatic efforts
President Nikos Christodoulides has expressed optimism regarding the potential for restarting Cyprus peace talks following his recent meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in Brussels. The Greek Cypriot side has proposed a specific date in early April for a new meeting between President Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman. As of March 28, 2026, there has been no official confirmation of this meeting from the Turkish Cypriot side. UN Special Representative Hasim Diane is scheduled to meet with Tufan Erhurman on Monday at 11:00 am to discuss the situation. Meanwhile, UN personal envoy Maria Angela Holguin has no current plans to return to the island. President Christodoulides also noted that issues concerning British base antennas and other bilateral matters with the UK are slated for discussion. While the Greek Cypriot government remains committed to a structured dialogue, reports indicate a persistent impasse due to the lack of response from the Turkish Cypriot leadership.
