Iranian forces seize Greek-managed container ship Epaminondas in Strait of Hormuz
On April 22, 2026, Iranian Revolutionary Guard forces intercepted and boarded the Liberia-flagged container ship Epaminondas near the coast of Oman. The vessel, managed by Technomar Shipping Inc. and owned by George Youroukos, was reported to be carrying 21 crew members, primarily of Ukrainian and Filipino nationality. While the Greek Ministry of Shipping initially denied the reports, the operating company later confirmed the boarding and stated that the captain was ordered to divert toward Larak Island. Alongside the Epaminondas, reports indicate that the Panama-flagged vessel MSC Francesca was also seized and redirected to Iranian waters. Iranian state media claimed the action was in response to alleged blockade attempts, while parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf stated the Strait of Hormuz would remain closed as long as Iranian ports are restricted. The White House has not classified these seizures as a violation of the current ceasefire. All crew members are reported to be safe with no injuries or environmental damage documented.
