Heightened tensions and naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz
Since April 13, the United States has enforced a naval blockade targeting Iranian ports, forcing dozens of vessels to turn back or return to port as part of the 'Economic Fury' operation. U.S. Central Command, utilizing the USS Rafael Peralta and other assets, has intercepted multiple tankers including the Majestic X, Tifani, Hedy, and Hero II, citing violations of sanctions. Iran has formally protested these actions, labeling them as piracy and a violation of international law, while the Iranian military has threatened a direct response to continued naval restrictions. Tensions are further exacerbated by reports of newly deployed mines in the Strait of Hormuz, which the U.S. has pledged to counter with lethal force. Despite the escalating situation, no formal negotiations are currently scheduled, although Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has engaged in diplomatic discussions in Islamabad regarding Tehran's stance. The disruption has significantly impacted oil shipping in the region, which typically accounts for 20% of global trade. International energy agencies note that these developments constitute one of the most severe disruptions in the history of the oil market.
