Larnaca District Organization of Local Self-Government demands clarity on waste management transfer

Angelos Hatziharalambous, president of the Larnaca District Organization of Local Self-Government (EOA), has officially stated that the organization will not assume responsibility for solid waste management without a fully costed framework. According to current legislation, district organizations are scheduled to take over this sector in July 2027. However, Hatziharalambous warned that significant technical, functional, and institutional questions remain unresolved. He highlighted that the national strategy for solid waste management is not expected to be completed until 2028. Furthermore, critical infrastructure such as the Kosi facility remains in the study and evaluation phase. The EOA stresses that it cannot accept these new duties until there is a clear understanding of the financial obligations and infrastructure data. The president emphasized that these decisions require careful planning rather than hasty transfers of responsibility.
