Trial continues regarding the 2019 death of 14-year-old Stylianos Konstantinos

The Nicosia district court continued proceedings on Tuesday in the trial concerning the 2019 death of 14-year-old Stylianos Konstantinos. Three police officers testified for the prosecution as the court examined alleged neglect and abuse cases. The total indictment involves 218 charges against 11 individuals, including the child’s parents and nine social welfare officials. During the hearing, defense lawyer Viktor Akamas, representing one of the social welfare employees, argued that the indictment lacked clarity regarding the legal basis for his client's alleged neglect of duty. Prosecutor Elena Constantinou disputed this claim, asserting that the charges are sufficiently detailed based on the evidentiary material. Judge Pavlos Ayapitos rejected the defense's request to provide further particulars, ruling that the indictment adequately defines the alleged offenses and that the existence of a specific legal duty will be determined during the trial. The parents face charges of physical and psychological violence, while social welfare staff are accused of neglect. The trial continues to focus on evidence of domestic abuse complaints reported prior to the boy's death.
