USS Gerald R. Ford arrives at Souda Bay for repairs following a major fire

The United States aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford is scheduled to arrive at the Souda Bay naval base in Greece this Wednesday. The vessel requires repairs and replenishment following a fire that burned for over 30 hours recently. Reports indicate the blaze originated in the laundry area and spread through ventilation systems, affecting multiple sections of the ship. While the U.S. Navy stated that operational capabilities remain unaffected, approximately 600 crew members have lost their living quarters and two sailors sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The ship, which has been on a 10-month deployment in the Middle East, is also dealing with reported ongoing maintenance issues involving its onboard facilities. The vessel carries a crew of roughly 4,500 personnel. Following the maintenance stop in Crete, the aircraft carrier is expected to return to the United States rather than resume operations in the Middle East. The visit has drawn protests from local organizations in Chania regarding the presence of NATO military assets.
