Iran requests FIFA to move World Cup matches from U.S. to Mexico
The Football Federation of the Islamic Republic of Iran is currently negotiating with FIFA to relocate its scheduled 2026 World Cup Group G matches from the United States to Mexico. Federation president Mehdi Taj announced the request on Monday, citing concerns regarding the safety of the Iranian squad following joint air strikes conducted by the United States and Israel against Iran. U.S. President Donald Trump previously suggested that it might not be appropriate for the Iranian team to play in the U.S. due to security risks. The tournament, which begins on June 11, features Group G matches for Iran against Belgium, Egypt, and New Zealand. Currently, Iran is scheduled to play two games in Los Angeles and one in Seattle. FIFA and the respective local organizing committees have not yet provided official responses regarding the potential logistical changes. A relocation would represent a major structural adjustment for the tournament, which is being jointly hosted by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.
