Detainee passes away in Larnaca Hospital

Panikos Kalaitzis, a 59-year-old man from Paphos, died at 2:15 a.m. in the cardiac ward of Larnaca General Hospital. He had been in police custody since March 11, 2026, pending an investigation into a case involving the procurement of credit under false pretenses. Mr. Kalaitzis was arrested pursuant to a court warrant on the same day as his detention. Due to health issues, he was immediately transferred to the hospital under police guard. On March 12, the Larnaca District Court, which convened at the hospital, issued a six-day detention order against him. While most sources place the death on an unspecified day, one source specifies the date as Tuesday, March 17. The Larnaca Criminal Investigation Department (TAE) is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.
