Trial for the death of three-year-old Angelos begins in Heraklion

The trial of the mother and stepfather of three-year-old Angelos has commenced at the Mixed Jury Court of Heraklion under high security. The defendants are charged with the fatal abuse of the toddler, who passed away on January 26, 2025. According to the indictment and medical examiner's report, the child suffered severe traumatic brain injuries consistent with a punch and Shaken Baby Syndrome. The autopsy also revealed previous bruising and cigarette burns across his body. The child had remained in the University General Hospital of Heraklion for two weeks in a brain-dead state before succumbing to his injuries. Following his death, his organs were donated to recipients in Greece and Germany. While the prosecution attributes the death to intentional torture, both defendants have sought to shift the blame onto each other during preliminary questioning.
