President Christodoulides holds meetings in Brussels on Cyprus issue
President Nikos Christodoulides travels to Brussels to attend the European Council summit and hold high-level meetings. On Wednesday, March 18, 2026, he is scheduled to meet with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to advocate for the immediate resumption of negotiations on the Cyprus issue. President Christodoulides intends to emphasize his political will to restart talks from the point where they were interrupted at Crans-Montana, based on UN Security Council resolutions and EU law. He is also set to meet with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to discuss regional developments, the issue of foot-and-mouth disease, and support measures. While some reports suggest recent assessments by UN envoy Maria Angela Holguin imply delays until July, the President’s office maintains that artificial waiting periods are unnecessary. Additionally, the President will participate in a European Policy Centre event regarding the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU. A National Council meeting has been convened for Monday to brief party leaders on these discussions.
