Suspended Paphos mayor to face trial for rape and abuse
The Legal Service of Cyprus has ordered the criminal prosecution of the suspended mayor of Paphos, Phedon Phedonos, regarding allegations of rape and sexual abuse dating back to 2014. The indictment, currently being finalized by the police, is expected to include four felony counts, including rape, indecent assault, and drugging an individual with intent to commit a crime. While the alleged offenses occurred in Paphos, the case will be lodged at the Limassol District Court to ensure a neutral venue for the proceedings. Once the case is formally registered at the District Court, it is expected to be referred to the Criminal Court for trial. Prosecutors have confirmed that these charges carry the potential for life imprisonment. Phedonos has publicly denied all allegations made against him. The complainant, who reported the incident ten years after the alleged events, is being supported throughout the legal process. The accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
