EU imposes sanctions on Iranian officials and entities

On Monday, the Council of the European Union announced sanctions against 16 individuals and three entities in Iran. These measures were taken in response to serious human rights violations committed during the suppression of street protests in January 2026, which reportedly resulted in thousands of civilian casualties. The sanctioned individuals include the Iranian Deputy Minister of the Interior for Security and Law Enforcement and various regional commanders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The three designated entities are the Naji Research and Development Center (NRDC), which developed surveillance software, and the Tehran Cyber Police, cited for internet censorship and digital surveillance. Penalties include a freeze on assets and a prohibition on cooperation with EU-based companies. The European Union justified these actions as a direct response to the violent crackdown on protesters. These sanctions represent a significant escalation in diplomatic pressure from the EU toward the Iranian administration regarding domestic human rights conduct.
