Damaged Russian LNG tanker Arctic Metagaz drifts in the Mediterranean
The 277-meter Russian-flagged LNG tanker Arctic Metagaz is currently drifting unmanned in the Mediterranean Sea following an explosion off the coast of Libya on March 4. As of March 15, the vessel was located approximately 50 nautical miles southwest of Malta. Aerial footage from AFP indicates the ship is listing to one side, showing severe fire damage and hull breaches. Maltese authorities are developing emergency response plans due to the significant amount of liquefied natural gas remaining on board, which poses a threat to navigation and the environment. While the exact cause of the incident remains under investigation, Russian officials have alleged that the damage resulted from an attack by an unmanned Ukrainian surface drone. The Russian Ministry of Transport stated that all 30 crew members were rescued safely. The vessel, which has previously been reported near the Italian island of Linosa, continues to be moved by sea currents.
