Cyprus Foreign Minister calls for increased EU engagement in the Middle East
On Monday, March 16, 2026, Cyprus Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos addressed the EU Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels. He argued that the ongoing Middle East conflict should no longer be viewed as a regional issue, as it has significant global consequences for energy, shipping, and maritime security. Kombos highlighted that addressing the Middle East, the Gulf region, and maritime security are primary priorities for the Cypriot EU presidency. He urged the European Union to adopt a more active stance and demonstrate solidarity with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and Lebanon regarding outstanding trade and policy commitments. Additionally, the minister confirmed that EU foreign ministers held initial discussions regarding a new European security strategy. Regarding reports of a potential expansion of the EU's maritime security mission to include the Strait of Hormuz, Kombos noted that the idea is currently being considered, though functional and practical aspects remain under review.
