Court sentences 51-year-old man to 13 years in prison for sexual offenses

On Friday, March 13, the Permanent Assize Court of Famagusta sentenced a 51-year-old man to 13 years in prison. The proceedings were held in a closed session. The defendant was found guilty of 15 out of 16 charges, including eight counts of rape, as well as sexual assault, making threats, and stalking. The crimes occurred between July and September 2023 in Agia Napa and Paralimni, targeting a 26-year-old foreign woman. In determining the sentence, the court emphasized the systemic nature of the offenses and considered relevant Cypriot and English case law, which typically assigns 9 to 10 years for single rape incidents. The court increased the sentence due to the multiplicity of acts and the defendant's prior criminal record for non-sexual offenses. The judge noted that, according to jurisprudence, cases involving multiple rape incidents fall into the highest sentencing categories.
