Argaka dam overflows following recent rainfall in Paphos
The Argaka dam, which has a capacity of 990,000 cubic meters, overflowed on Monday at approximately 08:30. As part of the Chrysochous irrigation project, the dam operates in conjunction with the Evretou, Agia Marina, and Pomos reservoirs. While local residents expressed optimism, viewing the event as a benefit for local agriculture and water security, officials provided a cautious outlook. The District Engineer of the Water Development Department, Mr. Kasioulis, emphasized that recent rainfall remains necessary due to overall low water levels in regional dams. He warned that the overflow does not imply water abundance and urged the public to continue practicing rational water usage. Local community members and visitors gathered at the site to observe the rare event. The overflow is considered a significant development for the region's agricultural output, which supplies products throughout Cyprus.
