Private healthcare providers protest delay in nursing recruitment legislation

The Parliamentary Health Committee has postponed the discussion of two legislative amendments proposed by Health Minister Neofytos Charalambidis. The legislation aims to facilitate the hiring of nurses from third countries to address critical staffing shortages. The committee opted to delay the debate to avoid conflict with nursing unions during the pre-election period. Private sector stakeholders, including the Cyprus Employers and Industrialists Federation (OEB), the Cyprus Private Hospitals Association, and the Cyprus Medical Association, have expressed strong dissatisfaction with this decision. These groups argue that union pressure is being prioritized over the rights of patients and the stability of the healthcare system. The OEB has warned that the ongoing shortage could lead to the reduction of services or the suspension of operations at various clinics. Private sector representatives are currently holding consultations to determine their next steps and potential collective actions. While the government emphasizes the urgency of the staffing crisis, unions remain firmly opposed to the inclusion of foreign nursing personnel.
