Ursula von der Leyen calls for migration diplomacy amid Middle East tensions
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has sent a letter to the leaders of the 27 EU member states ahead of the upcoming European Council meeting in Brussels, scheduled for March 19-20. The letter addresses the geopolitical instability following recent military actions involving the US, Israel, and Iran. Von der Leyen warns that the regional conflict poses significant risks to the European Union and urges member states to utilize all available migration diplomacy tools. While there have been no reports of large-scale migration flows to the EU yet, she emphasizes that the situation remains volatile and could change rapidly. Particular concern is directed toward Iran, which currently hosts approximately four million Afghan refugees in vulnerable conditions. To manage potential challenges, the Commission highlights the necessity of deepening cooperation with countries such as Turkey, Lebanon, and Pakistan. Member states are advised to remain vigilant and maintain operational readiness for potential future migration pressures. The EU aims to leverage diplomatic channels to preemptively address security and humanitarian risks stemming from the regional conflict.
