Cypriot ministers attend EU meetings in Brussels

Several Cypriot ministers are currently in Brussels to attend European Union council meetings. Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry George Damianou is presiding over the Transport, Telecommunications and Energy Council, where discussions focus on the European Networks Package and energy affordability, with investments estimated at 660 billion euros. Minister of Transport, Communications and Works Alexis Vafeadis is attending the Environment Council, replacing the Minister of Agriculture who is managing a foot-and-mouth disease outbreak in Cyprus. Meanwhile, Minister of Education, Sports and Youth Athena Michaelidou is presenting the priorities of the 2026 Cypriot EU Presidency at the CULT committee of the European Parliament. Minister Damianou emphasized that Cyprus remains stable and safe, confirming that planned informal councils will proceed as scheduled between April and June 2026. The energy council session also includes representatives from Ukraine and Moldova to discuss regional energy security. Minister Michaelidou is expected to return to Cyprus on Wednesday, March 18, 2026.
