Cyprus Futsal referees suspend matches after bomb attack
On March 14, 2026, at approximately 10:30 p.m., an explosive device of medium power detonated outside a private gym in Nicosia owned by an active Futsal referee. The incident caused damage to the property's glass storefront and a nearby parked vehicle belonging to a 29-year-old woman. In response, the Cyprus Referees Association (SDK) unanimously decided to abstain from all scheduled Futsal matches for the current week. A meeting was subsequently held between the Cyprus Football Association (KOP), led by President Charis Loizides, and the SDK, represented by President Christos Spanos. Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to combat violence in sports and ensure the safety of officials and spectators. The KOP officially accepted the referees' decision to pause league activities and announced that a further meeting will be held to discuss additional security measures. The Omonoia Nicosia club has strongly condemned the attack, describing it as a criminal act that undermines the integrity of the sport.
